Campervan storage: carry less and find everything

Good campervan storage is less about fitting more into the van and more about making the things you actually need easy to find.

The quickest way to create storage space is not to buy more boxes.

It is to carry less.

Start by removing what you do not use

Before reorganising anything, empty the obvious problem areas and ask:

  • Did we use this on the last few trips?
  • Do we already carry another item that does the same job?
  • Is this here because we need it, or because there happened to be space?

Removing unused kit makes every later storage decision easier.

Give everything a permanent home

The best storage system is one you do not have to think about.

Frequently used items should live somewhere obvious and easy to reach.

Less-used items can go deeper into cupboards, under seats or into garage storage.

If something moves around the van every trip, it probably does not have a proper home yet.

Store things where you use them

Keep equipment close to the job it performs.

For example:

  • cooking equipment near the kitchen
  • hook-up equipment near the external connection
  • levelling equipment where it can be reached before unpacking
  • cleaning products together
  • outdoor gear near the door or garage

This reduces searching and stops one cupboard becoming the place where everything gets thrown.

Use containers carefully

Boxes, baskets and organisers can help, but only after you have reduced what you carry.

Too many containers can waste space and make it harder to see what you own.

Use them where they solve a specific problem:

  • stopping small items moving
  • grouping related equipment
  • making deep cupboards easier to access
  • keeping dirty or wet equipment separate

Avoid buying organisers simply because they fit a cupboard.

Avoid deep storage black holes

Deep cupboards are useful until the thing you need is behind six other things.

Where possible:

  • keep frequently used items near the front
  • group similar items together
  • use shallow removable containers
  • avoid stacking too many layers

The goal is to retrieve something without unpacking half the cupboard.

Heavy items need thought

Storage is also a weight-distribution issue.

Heavy equipment should generally be stored securely and as low as practical.

Avoid concentrating unnecessary weight high up or at the extreme rear of the vehicle.

Your campervan’s total and axle weights still matter even when everything fits neatly.

See Campervan payload explained simply for the weight side of the problem.

Stop things moving

Anything loose can become noisy, damaged or dangerous while driving.

Simple fixes often work:

  • non-slip matting
  • dividers
  • small containers
  • straps
  • cupboard catches
  • soft packing between fragile items

A storage system that works perfectly on a campsite but empties itself on the first roundabout is not working.

Make arriving and leaving easier

Good storage should reduce setup time.

Think about the order in which things are needed.

On arrival you may want quick access to:

  • levelling ramps
  • hook-up lead
  • water equipment
  • outdoor chairs

On departure, wet or dirty equipment may need somewhere separate from clean kit.

Design storage around the way you actually use the van rather than how it looks when parked at home.

Keep everyday items simple

The items you reach for constantly deserve the easiest storage.

Examples include:

  • keys
  • glasses
  • charging cables
  • torches
  • dog leads
  • rubbish bags
  • toilet supplies

Small repeat frustrations are often worth fixing before large storage projects.

Review the van after each trip

Storage improves quickly when you treat each trip as a test.

Ask:

What was difficult to find?

Give it a better home.

What kept getting in the way?

Move it or remove it.

What did we never use?

Question whether it needs to come next time.

The TouringSmarter rule

Do not organise clutter. Remove it first.

Then give the things that remain a simple, permanent place.

A well-organised campervan should make touring easier, not turn packing into another hobby.
